Indesign Headache

For our 'PEP160' Unit we were required to make our own mock up magazine spread using stories that we had previously shot. The first page must include an establishing image and headline etc, with further continuation of the story on the next page.
Now I don't like using InDesign at the best of times, I'm not particularly confident on the program. We have had fortnightly training sessions on the program however I have found these completely irrelevant due to the combination of a Indesign tutor that doesn't seem to like people, and a hot stuffy room which makes concentration impossible.
The lessons with Dave White have been much more useful, gaining inspiration from sites like Issuu, however this doesn't help with the technical side of things.
Add this to the fact I am as about a good graphic designer as I am dancer and you get one unhappy Campbell.

Anyway this is what I have produced today.

Redruth St Pirans Festivities

Today i travelled to the town of Redruth for their celebrations for St Pirans day (which actually isn't till monday, but they celebrated early). St Piran is the patron saint of Tin-miners and celebrated widely all over cornwall. He is also widely regarded as the patron saint of Cornwall.

I unfortunately couldn't get over to Redruth in time for the parade to the rugby club, but the Rugby club had much going on inside from 1pm, and then at 3pm it was Redruth vs Hertford rugby match which was a really good game. Redruth won the match 38-24 after initially going behind.

The whole day was quite bizarre as all the different things going on. A military display, some 'street' style dancing, a choir, children running around in martial arts clothing, a lazer tag arena, steam engined tractors, a brass band and all culminated by a good old game of rugby.
Whilst i was there I shot off 4 films for my Relationships project, and some digital images aswell.

Relationships 2

I took these images during the day of CSM vs RSM sports, firstly at the football and then at the rugby, the last two images were taken at the end of the 'tunnel', the show of respect rugby players give each other after each match where the teams walk through a tunnel made up by the opposite players shaking hands.
I have mixed feels about these images, I like the first two images, I feel like they are a very truthful portrayal of the CSM crowd that day. I especially the second image. I like the last two images due to the fact they are much closer and you feel apart of it more.
My reasoning behind the mixed feelings behind the images is purely down to the success of my first shoot. My first shoot went perfectly, and I produced a set of images which I think are possibly my best ever. I dont feel these are as good as my first shoot by any means, but the brief is that I have to submit three singular Relationship photographs from Three different shoots. I think I will have to find a subject, a group of people as nice as those at Chyan and feel as comfortable in the shoot to produce images to that quality again. Chyan was special circumstances, circumstances that are not easy to replicate when you have other briefs and heavy workload ontop of a taxing relationships brief.

What I am trying to say is Do I use one of these Images as a Relationships Image, leaving myself with 1 shoot to go for Relationships, or Do I scrap it and find something new?
All opinions would be gratefully received.

C-41

Today marked a new chapter in my first year of my Press & Editorial photography degree, we were inducted onto the C-41 processing machine. For this we were required to go shoot a roll of colour film to process.  We had to shoot in daylight, to get the best range of colours and tones. I went out into Falmouth by myself armed with my Canon T70 a 50mm Lens and a Single roll of Colour film. The colour printing comes tomorrow, which I am very excited about, for now I scanned in two images.

90.

Umbrella.

The first image I like because of the way I went about shooting it, Whilst driving past in my car I noticed her sitting on the bench and how her coat was simular colouring to the gravel behind her. I just thought it would look cool on colour film, so i pulled over and approached her. I'm sure she was more nervous than I was, a 22yr old striding up to her with a camera, but I do struggle sometimes with approaching strangers asking to photograph them, as the British public can be quite nasty about it. However she was very sweet and after I told her I was a documentary photographer just documenting Falmouth for the day she let me take her portrait. I quite like it.

The second image of the umbrella I shot with practicing colour printing in the back of my mind. It's got a lot of tones and colours and so I thought could make an interesting print. I won't go into a babble about the representation of the umbrella amongst the trash... It was simply there so I shot it.

Relationships

Chloe-Amber & Gregg playing with their dog in their home on Chyan Community fields on 18/02/12

Chris (guitar), Gregg (drum) and Marina (flute) improvising together whilst young Beth watches.

Chyan community fields is actually a Farm, there are on average 15 people that live in their separate caravans, trucks and old busses. It is not a travellers site where people move on after a week or so, The inhabitants stay for long periods of time and make it their home. It is an alternative way of living. It is not completely self sustainable but large parts of it is. They charge their batteries for electricity via wind turbines that are on site and their water comes from a near by spring. Each person rents their part for a small fee, or if they choose can do around 8hrs volunteer work on the farm, such as the vegetable patches instead.

I made two visits to Chyan Community fields, firstly on Wednesday 15th February, for introductions and then on Saturday 18th I spent a day and night with the people that live on Chyan, documenting the small community and how they interact with each other. What I really took from the whole experience was how close they all are. As it is such a small community of like minded characters, they all seem so tight. In saying this they were all more than accomodating and welcoming, making me feel at home in the time I was there. I was slightly envious of their lifestyle, it felt to me as if their simpler way of living, was far more beneficial. They have everything they need, and can spend their time enjoying each others company in the evening. Enjoying the little things in life.

I am going to continue to document Chyan as a personal study, I have made friends there and I find it such a visually interesting place to study.

The website, I feel is a terrible representation of place it is, however if you are interested in looking

Metro

I have been terrible at updating my blog recently,
I find negative scanning so tedious however with my new equipment I have been given it comes with a little mini scanner,
The quality isn't great but at least i can scan from the comfort of my own home.
Here is the first image I have scanned using my own equipment.

A band plays in an underground metro station in Paris, France.

24hr Project - A Portrait of Plymouth - The Darkies Tunnels

For my degree, we were given an assignment that would direct us, and give us a feel of the pressure and time constraints of Press Photography. We were asked to make our own way to Plymouth from Falmouth, shoot, edit and upload our projects before the midnight deadline. The brief was that we had to show a different side to Plymouth, and not just your usual walk around the street and take pictures of buildings. This meant we had to do prior research (about 5 days to do the research) and go there with idea's, shoots and contacts in mind.

I decided to shoot some disused railway tunnels that was a truly hidden side to Plymouth due to the limited number of people with knowledge of their existence. The tunnels themselves had been stripped of railway and abandoned since the 1980's, disused for quite some time previously. What I hadn't gathered on, is that the council had recently boarded up all entrances to these tunnels due to pesky troublemakers using the tunnels as a place to congregate, drink, cause litter etc. This meant my plans immediately had to change, I learned from one of the locals in the area that the last remaining access to the tunnels was beneath the City College. I was dispirited at hearing this, as college's are notorious for not letting people on to site without prior arrangement due to health and saftey and background checks. I thought I might as well try my luck and after talking to the receptionist, and then to one of the security / caretakers I managed to convince them to take me down there. Although I could not explore as far as I would of liked, I managed to achieve everything I set out to do and my day, the people I met and talked to was a photo story in itself.

Although I am not hugely proud of the set of images I produced, the fact that I set out and completed my intentions, overcoming obstacles and gaining access that I've always struggled with, worked within a time constraint and approached Plymouth with a single idea and managed to expand that into a photo story made me hugely proud of my work. Here are the results.

.
'American Bobby', 36 from Tennessee, who has lived in Devonport for 5 years working for Chris & Robs Barbers had detailed knowledge of the locations of the tunnels.

The tunnels lie underneath Devenport park, an area that has been neglected in it's upkeep. Because of this The tunnel entrances have been boarded up by the council to prevent further damage and grafitti.

The Last remaining entrance is underneath the City College of Plymouth. The Security guard, From Devonport is the current keyholder to the last access to the tunnels.

The Railway line was used in the Napoleon Wars up till the end of the First World war to help deal with casulties and transport of goods.

There is the question of what will happen to 'The Darkies' as vast underground spaces continue to go unused with the majority of the inhabitants of Plymouth unaware of it's exsistance.

The tunnels have laid derelict and stripped of the railways since the 1980's, Untill boarded up the tunnels were used as a place for social gathering and eriee nights.

Darkies Tunnels, two disused railway tunnels that used to make up part of the London and South western Railway, constructed in the late 1800's. The track passes underground from Albert Road halt through Devonport park to Devonport Kings Road station, now the site of City college of Plymouth for 485 metres

Back in Falmouth

I am back in Falmouth now to continue along my Press & Ed path,
It's been a busy week already due to the HACS deadline yesterday,
but I completed it with time to spare, I developed 10 of the films needed yesterday and have 4 more to do today
I am pretty pleased with the results so far, and am looking forward to contact sheeting them up
(although this is where the films I thought to be wonderful are utter tripe).

I have a lot of digital shots as well that I need to shift through and upload, all this to do in the month of deadlines is weighing me down, so I will try and upload my latest work as soon as possible, but it might take some time.

In the mean time I leave you with an uplifting video to watch on Bruce Gilden

Wake Up Rhiannon

I wanted to practice use with a Metz 45 cl-4 flash that I took out of the university stores one evening, Previously that night I had taken some images of other people from my course however these were all just 'test' shots. When I returned back to my flat I decided I would knock on everybody's doors at 3am and capture them when they had just woken up. Rhiannon was the only one silly enough to open her door at this awful hour, and so then became my next mini photo project.

So for all of this Rhiannon, I do apologise, But thank you.

British Behaviour

A male leaves a fight fists clenched

YouTube Generation

A solitary man unaware of the drama

A girl sobs after consuming too much

Little compassion as the boyfriend turns away

These are images that i took using my iphone 4 after walking the streets of Falmouth on a 'student' night out. I noticed the high level of bad behaviour around me, and so set myself a mini-project of capturing the typical scenes of a 'night gone wrong'.  My particular favourite image is the first one of the man leaving a fight, i think he sums up the current 'alpha-male' attitude that the young generation can have. Fists clenched and Muscles tensed, standing with almost a sense of pride for what just happened.

Hostile Environments

Myself and others on Press & Editorial went to do Hostile Environments training run by Blue Dot Saftey, This course enabled us to learn how to act in all different kinds of hostile situations that we might end up in as photojournalists today. There wasn't much chance to use a camera on the course as the days were mainly classroom based, and the night excersises we had to keep light to a minimum and therefore no flashguns. The images above were part of an exit a vehicle drill and getting to cover as quickly as possible. I included the portrait of Alex as I really like it. The morning light was beatufiul and the images all came out well.

Truro City of Lights

I went over to Truro for the lights festival on Wednesday 16th November 2011 with intention of shooting film for a 'community' project I was given. As usual, I took my digital along and switched between film and digital. I managed to get myself between the barriers and amongst the parade with a confident walk past the security and they just assumed I was official press for the event. I learnt a lot about the difficulties of shooting in the dark at speed without a flash, and made me realise how much I have to learn technically with photography. My film shoot came out very dark, and hasn’t worked, but i managed to salvage a few images I like from the digital side of things.
It is said as a photographer, if you enjoy your shoot more, it will show through in your work, unfortunately I really enjoyed this shoot, yet it isn't the best I’ve produced.
