Cartel Gallery

I Now have my own Gallery album on the Cartel Photos agency. It's official! It's a brilliant feeling to be part of an exhibition, an online publication which has had thousands of hits in only a couple of days, and now to have my work displayed with a photo agency who has major links with Panos pictures.

 I'm incredibly proud.

On Sunday 4th March, hundreds of people attended a march, followed by a three-act play, produced by the St Piran Trust. Actors present St Piran’s life from his birth in Ireland, his arrival in Cornwall and the discovery of tin.

The Event is held in Perranporth on the nearest Sunday to St Piran's Day, March 5th, as this is where according to legend St Piran washed up on a millstone from Ireland in the 5th Century AD.

I am really pleased with this set of images, Especially the first image on my blog. When I first developed the negatives and printed up the contact sheets I was disappointed with the shoot. I didn't think I had anything, but then after my tutors picked out the top image as a really nice shot, and asked me to Scan it and FTP it to Cartel Photos so they could put it up on the front page I looked harder and saw the images in a completely different light. I made an edit (the pictures above) and have sent them to the Cartel so hopefully I will have my first complete set of images up there!

I'm so happy with how my photography has developed over this Relationships brief and how much my work has improved from last term. The ideas are still taking time to come through however I am not making as many technical mistakes as I did first term and I am producing much better Images.

Chyan community fields is actually a Farm, there are on average 15 people that live in their separate caravans, trucks and old busses. It is not a travellers site where people move on after a week or so, The inhabitants stay for long periods of time and make it their home. It is an alternative way of living. It is not completely self sustainable but large parts of it is. They charge their batteries for electricity via wind turbines that are on site and their water comes from a near by spring. Each person rents their part for a small fee, or if they choose can do around 8hrs volunteer work on the farm, such as the vegetable patches instead.

I made two visits to Chyan Community fields, firstly on Wednesday 15th February, for introductions and then on Saturday 18th I spent a day and night with the people that live on Chyan, documenting the small community and how they interact with each other. What I really took from the whole experience was how close they all are. As it is such a small community of like minded characters, they all seem so tight. In saying this they were all more than accomodating and welcoming, making me feel at home in the time I was there. I was slightly envious of their lifestyle, it felt to me as if their simpler way of living, was far more beneficial. They have everything they need, and can spend their time enjoying each others company in the evening. Enjoying the little things in life.

I am going to continue to document Chyan as a personal study, I have made friends there and I find it such a visually interesting place to study.

Metro

I have been terrible at updating my blog recently,
I find negative scanning so tedious however with my new equipment I have been given it comes with a little mini scanner,
The quality isn't great but at least i can scan from the comfort of my own home.
Here is the first image I have scanned using my own equipment.

Paris

Here are some work from a couple of rolls I shot whilst visiting Paris in February 2011. These films remained undeveloped till last week when I came across them in a photography bag of mine. I was particularly excited to begin printing these. The first print of the homeless man with dog, I am very proud as I had to do a lot of dodging where the metro tunnel is and also the man's jacket. Under a straight print there would be almost no information there. The second image is of an illegal immigrant trying to sell bracelets to Japanese tourists on the steps up to the Sacre Coeur, they were unhappy about their photo being taken, but i managed to get the shot i wanted before running away! The third image is of two people from a small band playing in the underground. I shall continue to print when I have some free time on my hands.

Royal Mail Sorting office - Falmouth

After not feeling great about my Food bank shoot, I went to the sorting office and managed to get access. It wasn't so fun getting up at 5am, but once I got shooting I forgot the tiredness and really started to enjoy myself. As I only had my crit today I had only printed up ones that I liked before Guy had a chance to look at them. He told me he was surprised at the selection that I had gone for, so tomorrow I shall carry on with the images that Guy boxed out in red.

Truro Food Bank

These images were my first shoot for the 'Person at work' project. I have such mixed reactions about this shoot, so much so I am uncertain if I shall submit it. I went to Truro food bank for the homeless, however surprisingly no homeless showed up. This just lead me to shoot people sorting out food into sell by dates for 3 hours. I found it hard to concentrate and work different angles. In the crit when I showed this work, and mentioned that I was unsure on it, Guy Martin's reaction was similar to mine, Although I have pictures I can use, he boxed out in green, that it would probably be good to re shoot if I felt that I want to. However my course mates and flat mates have had a different reaction, marking out in red ones that a few of them liked.
I haven't done many work prints yet as I have been focussing on other shoots.

Lucy.

I have finally invested in a scanner so I can get some of my film work online. It's not a negative scanner though so the quality won't be particularly good. This is a portrait of Lucy I took in my first week, the contact sheet above. This was a project set by the 2nd year 'mentors' entitled 'Who do you think you are?'. This is taken on campus with my Canon T-70 with a 35-70mm Sigma Lens and a Skylight filter.
